About Kofuku-ji Temple

700 Years of History

Founded in 1333, Kofukuji Temple is a historic sanctuary located in Mano-no-Sato, an area mentioned in Japan’s oldest poetry collection, the Man’yoshu. For over 700 years, Kofukuji has preserved the history and traditions of the Mano region, serving as a spiritual anchor for the community. Although it was damaged during the Kobe air raids of 1945 and the Great Hanshin Earthquake, the temple was carefully restored with the support of the local community.
The main deity is Amitabha Buddha, known as the “Buddha of Infinite Light and Life,” who offers compassion and guidance to all beings. Kofukuji’s grounds feature tranquil Japanese gardens and the traditional tea house Yuuyuutei, where visitors can experience Japan’s cultural heritage.

Experience

Experience

  1. Shomyo Chanting Experience
Shomyo Chanting Experience the traditional Buddhist chanting of Shomyo at Kofukuji. This form of Buddhist music, which dates back to the 8th century, adds melodies to sutras and has a calming effect on the mind. Kofukuji s Shomyo follows the Shinshu Bukkouji tradition, based on the 2th-century GyoOan school of Tendai Buddhism.
The chanting is performed in front of Amitabha Buddha, and its sound is considered the voice of Buddha. Buddha reflects on our desires and delusions(Bonnoh: greed, anger, ignorance), and by listening to the chants, you can confront and cleanse your own mind. In the midst of a busy life, experience a meditative moment that brings peace and clarity. Limited participants may also wear traditional monk robes during the experience.
  2. Brahma Bell
Try ringing the Brahma Bell, a large ceremonial bell used in Buddhist rituals, known for its deep, resonant sound. The bell is said to help release suffering and bring enlightenment. Modeled after the bell at Byodoin Temple in Kyoto, Kofukuji s Brahma Bell purifies the mind and promotes a state of inner calm. During the experience, bow before the bell to center yourself, then strike it slowly, letting its sound wash away stress and bring a sense of tranquility.
  3. Nirvana Garden
